National Recycling Week helps you better understand what happens to your rubbish and recycling beyond the bin, and how to improve your environmental footprint with tips and ideas on applying the waste hierarchy to your daily life.

Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week have created three resources to help educators connect children to the wonders of the natural world through sensory and play-based learning. This lesson has been developed as part of the Schools Recycle Right Challenge for Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week.

Activities are differentiated for 0 to 2-year-olds, and 3 to 5-year-olds. Suggestive learning evaluation criteria included in each lesson.

Each lesson is aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework and includes hand-on, children-centred learning activities that are fun and engaging and cover:

  • Waste and recycling investigations
  • Describing and sorting waste
  • Sorting waste according to size, shape, weight, colour and texture
  • A sensory exploration of paper (feel, smell, and sound)
  • Drawing the connection between paper and trees

These activities will help you embed sustainability and recycling into your daily practice at your centre and in your community.

Activities :

  •  Build a robot.
Don’t throw away the cardboard boxes and yogurt containers! Build a robot with these materials.

  • Paint the symbol.
Practice recognizing this symbol through art. This way, kids can easily identify recycling bins out in public.

  • Make recycling bins for the home.
Making small bins that can be kept indoors allows kids the chance to easily sort the garbage.

  •  Donate toys and clothes.
Instead of throwing away toys, your kids are done playing with, help them choose some to be donated and reused by other children.
